Teeth prepare the food for its efficient utilization by the organism. Their maintenance until the venerable age is of key importance for the mouth preventive treatment.
Mouth preventive treatment includes the following main activities: food and fluorine preventive treatment, mouth hygiene and active treatment of the dental diseases at their initial stage.
Objectives of the mouth hygiene are as follo
Removal of plaque/tartar, dental deposits - food, professional etc./, because they are the pathological factors causing the main dentist diseases;
Improvement of the structure of hard dental tissues, mouth mucosa and support tissue complex and their resistance against outside harmful factors;
Satisfaction of the aesthetics and psychological and emotional human mood.
These objectives could be achieved by maintaining of high individual /personal/ and professional/medical-dentist/ mouth hygiene.
All organs and structures in the mouth are strongly dependent on the mouth hygiene. These are solid tooth tissues/email, cement/, mouth mucosa and gums as well as their natural environment/gum secret and saliva/. Tooth plaque is a matter of high interest. Its origin, composition, structure, development and activity of the tooth plaque and its impact as a pathological factor causing caries and parodontium diseases have been investigated.

Most frequently the tissue and functional complex of the mouth are injured by the tartar. Its removal is a key element of the professional mouth hygiene. Good mouth hygiene together with the fluoridation and rational nourishing are the main directions of preventive treatment of the tooth caries.
How to maintain the mouth care
Tooth plaque is a coating formed on the dental surface. It is a soft formation of microorganisms and products generated by their activity. Plaque is closely fixed to the tooth surface and could not be removed by mouth rinse. Surfaces where the biggest amount of plaque is formed are the main places where caries could occur.
Most effective and harmless way of plaque removal is the mechanical cleaning by toothbrush and tooth paste.
Toothbrush is mainly designed to remove efficiently the plaque as accessing all places in the mouth. Toothbrush should be selected carefully depending on the age and condition of the mouth.
There are manual and electrical toothbrushes. Manual toothbrushes are well-known. Handle shall be placed under an angle towards the toothbrush in order to facilitate the hygiene procedures. Shape of the work surface of the toothbrush should allow cleaning of all surfaces of the dental crowns and inter-dental space. Until recently, toothbrushes with natural filament were preferred.
However, these toothbrushes are not efficient for the purposes of the mouth hygiene. Recently, toothbrushes made of artificial filaments with round top are mostly used, because they do not irritate the soft tissues in the mouth and have some antiseptic action as well.
Most difficult is to clean the rear dental surfaces and mostly the interdental spaces. Toothpick made of plastic or wood could be used for this purpose as auxiliary cleaning means. For cleaning of the interdental surfaces also silk filaments are used/ /dental floss - waxed or unwaxed/, but in all cases it has to be made after the brushing.
Also, rinse of the mouth and water irrigations /pressurized showers/ could be applied. Cleaning of the interdental spaces could be made by the use of brushes with single bunches of filaments and conical accessories, which could massage the gums.
Brushing is the most popular manner for maintenance of the private hygiene of the mouth. In this case, by the means of horizontal, mixed horizontal-vertical, round and vertical movements the maximal part of the dental surface would be cleaned. In the cases when the mouth is damaged by chemical substances /organic or non-organic acids/ it is recommended some additional rinse to be made with 1% solution of boron water or with 2-3% solution of sodium bicarbonate. If any damage is caused by bases then very law solutions of fruit acid and oxygen water are used for neutralizing.

The dental plaque removal is made by the means of toothpastes, toot powders and solutions /elixirs/. There are several types of toothpastes:

  • Hygiene-preventive toothpastes. They do not contain any active substances and are used for removal of the dental plaque;
  • Medical-preventive toothpastes. They contain some biological active substances /antiseptics, antibiotics, vitamins, calcium and ammonia salts, medical extracts etc./

As an additional cleaning agent the hygiene chewing gums are used, which are especially preferred by children and young people. Chewing gums contain antiseptic agents, fluorides, enzymes, microelements, vitamins and extracts of remedy plants.
